Personal Background
Jon Daniel Runyan, 36, was born in Flint, Michigan. His father worked for General Motors for nearly 30 years and his Mom largely stayed home and raised Jon and his two younger twin brothers. An all-state basketball player and two-time state shot put champion in high school, Jon earned a scholarship to the University of Michigan to play football, becoming the first person in his family to attend college. At Michigan, Jon studied Kinesiology. More recently, Jon studied Entrepreneurial Management at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business in Philadelphia. Jon currently resides in Mount Laurel Township with his wife Loretta and three children, Jon, Jr., Alyssa and Isabella.
Professional Football Career
Jon was drafted out of Michigan by the Houston Oilers (now Tennessee Titans) in 1996 and helped the Titans reach the Super Bowl in 2000. Jon then signed with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he enjoyed a stellar career as a Pro-Bowl offensive tackle who helped lead the Eagles to a Super Bowl appearance in 2004. Jon was widely regarded as one of the team’s most popular players due to his work ethic and tenacity on the field, and his active involvement in his community off the field. Jon retired from football at the end of the 2010 season.
Community Involvement
Jon’s involvement in and passion for countless charities is well-known in the Philadelphia-South Jersey area. Jon has worked with the NJ Special Olympics, USO, Leukemia-Lymphoma Society, the American Red Cross, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. He is also a Board Member for the Alzheimer’s Association of the Delaware Valley and a five-time host of his own “Score for the Cure” Golf Tournament benefiting prostate cancer research here in New Jersey.
Broadcasting & Media Credits
In addition to his exploits on the football field, Jon’s stints as on-air analyst and personality for Comcast SportsNet, 610 WIP Sports Talk Radio and 92.5 WXTU Country Radio, as well as a Player Reporter for Fox 29 in Philadelphia, have made him a recognizable and popular figure in the Philadelphia media market.
Why Jon Will Win this Campaign
Jon is a fiscal conservative who believes in lower taxes and less spending, and that the answers to our problems don’t lie with the federal government, but with the American people. His core values of hard work, individual responsibility and self-reliance have shaped who he is as a person and who he will be as a Congressman. John Adler was a rubberstamp for the failed McGreevey-Corzine agenda in Trenton, and has voted with Nancy Pelosi more than 90% of the time in Congress. Jon’s conservative message, outsider status, name recognition and ability to raise money will spell the end of John Adler’s brief congressional career in November.
